Villa offer touted as new sporting director lined up

Aston Villa have reportedly made an offer to Antonio Cordon following his decision to leave his post as sporting director at Real Betis.

After the appointment of Unai Emery last October, there have been several reports suggesting that the Spanish tactician will have more control and power in the decision-making process at the club compared to previous managers.

As he prepares for his first summer transfer window as Villa boss – one that is expected to be very busy based on CEO Christian Purslow’s comments at the weekend, it’s crucial that there is complete synergy between Emery and the hierarchy in who is signed to strengthen the squad.

According to Estadio Deportivo, there could be a significant change in that department for Villa, as it’s reported that we and Barcelona have made attractive offers to Cordon, who will now consider his options as he is expected to leave Betis at the end of the season along with his assistants who may well follow him to his next club too.

It remains to be seen if there are genuine offers on the table for him from both clubs, and ultimately time will tell which project and proposal is more appealing to him as he looks for a new challenge ahead of next season.

Emery, and now the Villa hierarchy, will no doubt be fully aware of Cordon’s previous experience and the excellent job that he has done as a sporting director, and so they are seemingly convinced that he can bring a great deal to the club and help us in our strategy moving forward to recruit well and compete at a higher level.

Should an agreement be reached and an appointment made, that would of course cast real doubt over the future of Johan Lange at Villa, as not only have question marks been raised over some of our signings in recent years, but it’s natural there is talk of Emery bringing in his preferred option for that role.

It promises to be an important crossroads for Villa this summer, as while we started to clear the squad last month of players deemed surplus to requirements who were signed prior to Emery’s arrival, he is likely to be heavily backed at the end of the season to really mould the squad into his own.

Having his own sporting director in place will no doubt help him achieve what he wants in the transfer market and bring in his preferred targets, and Cordon could be the ideal choice.
