Villa closing in on big-money swoop to bolster Emery’s midfield

Aston Villa are reportedly finalising a deal to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana in a transfer said to be worth around £50m.

The 22-year-old joined the Toffees from Lille in August 2022, and he has since gone on to make 72 appearances for the club, scoring four goals and providing three assists to go with his influence in midfield.

Further, he has now been capped 17 times by Belgium as he has solidified his position in the national team, and with a bright future ahead of him, he’ll hope to continue to develop and improve his game further.

That process could seemingly now continue at Villa, as The Athletic report that we are finalising an agreement worth around £50m to sign the Belgian international from Everton, while personal terms have already been agreed between the two parties on a long-term contract.

It’s been a busy summer for Villa already with a number of arrivals and departures, and a focus has been our midfield following the exits of Douglas Luiz and Tim Iroegbunam, while Morgan Sanson has also now moved on permanently.

Enzo Barrenechea and Ross Barkley have been brought in to help fill the voids and add quality to that department to hopefully suit Emery’s ideas and style of play more effectively, and it looks as though Onana will be the next reinforcement to address that particular issue.

Based on our overall transfer strategy so far this summer with Ian Maatsen, Samuel Iling-Junior, Kosta Nedeljkovic and Lewis Dobbin also arriving, it feels as though there is a clear push to become more physical, athletic and energetic in an indication as to how Emery wants to set us up moving forward.

Onana will certainly tick those boxes and will hopefully establish himself as a fundamental presence in our midfield if he does indeed join us, but with Emery, Monchi and the Villa recruitment team all geared towards building a squad capable of improving on last season and becoming increasingly competitive, the Everton midfielder is clearly seen as an ideal fit for us in the coming years.
