Aston Villa have reportedly dismissed reports in the media that Antonio Cordon is set to join the club this summer as sporting director.
Reports in Spain, specifically from Muchodeporte via Canal Sur Radio, suggested this week that a deal was close to bring Cordon to Villa along with his previous assistants at Real Betis.

It wasn’t the first time that the Spaniard had been linked with a move to join the club, but that doesn’t appear to be the case for now at least, with the claims being dismissed.
As per Matt Maher of the Express and Star, Villa have insisted that Cordon isn’t set to join as sporting director, but Alberto Benito, who worked with him at Betis, is expected to arrive as the club’s new Spanish-based scout.
Time will tell if that means there is simply no deal yet agreed for Cordon or if we have no intention of making such an appointment this summer, but the rumours seemingly haven’t gone away in Spain and there is perhaps something to it for them to have come back around again a few months later.
For now though, that suggestion can be dismissed, and the focus will remain on our next match against Brentford this weekend as well as the rest of the current campaign as we continue to compete for a place in Europe next season.
It’s expected to be an important summer for Villa with Emery likely to be significantly backed in the transfer market to improve and strengthen our squad while moulding it into his own, and the idea of a new sporting director being appointed who he would work closely with moving forward, made a lot of sense.
It remains to be seen if Cordon or an alternative option eventually arrive at the end of the season as part of some important changes at management level, but it’s evidently not something on Villa’s agenda right now, albeit we look forward to seeing Benito arrive at some stage and hopefully identify and bring in some top talents from Spain in the future.
