Double signing confirmed as Villa land talented duo to bolster Emery’s squad

Aston Villa have officially announced the double signing of Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling Jr from Juventus.

It follows on from Douglas Luiz’s exit to move in the opposite direction to join the Turin giants, as Villa add two talented young players who will hopefully prove to be important additions to Unai Emery’s squad.

As per the club’s official statement, Barrenechea and Iling Jr are now Villa players after significant speculation in recent weeks, and they’ll undoubtedly be looking forward to pre-season this month to integrate, impress and stake their claim for a key role in the upcoming campaign.

According to Fabrizio Romano, while Luiz’s move was worth €50m, this double transfer will be worth €22m in total.

Both possess quality and talent, while there is plenty of potential there too. In turn, it’s hoped that they can flourish under Emery’s coaching, as they’ll hope to add crucial competition and depth at the very least in the coming years.

Barrenechea, 23, joined Juventus in January 2020, and despite limited opportunities with the Bianconeri, he impressed during his loan spell with Frosinone in Serie A last season where he made 39 appearances across all competitions.

As for Iling Jr, the 20-year-old made 27 appearances for Juve last year, and so he’ll hope to build on that along with Barrenchea in becoming important options for Emery as we look to compete across multiple fronts next season and beyond.

Injuries hurt us last season as we went without key options for significant periods. Having been limited in central midfield and on the left side, these two signings will hopefully help to address those issues moving forward.

That said, we’ve seen Tim Iroegbunam and Luiz depart this summer, and so the expectation is that we’ll see further reinforcements arrive this summer in order to ensure that we have enough in that department to be consistently competitive over the course of what promises to be another gruelling campaign.

Barrenechea and Iling Jr become our third and fourth signings of the summer following the arrivals of Lewis Dobbin and Ian Maatsen, and so with our PSR concerns seemingly addressed for now, there will be a fascinating wait to see what further reinforcements arrive between now and the end of the transfer window.
