Key terms of deal touted as Villa confirm third deadline-day signing

Aston Villa have confirmed the initial season-long loan signing of Harvey Elliott from Liverpool, with an obligation to buy conditional on appearances.

The 22-year-old joined the Reds from Fulham in 2019, and he has since gone on to make 149 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals and providing 20 assists.

In that time, he’s not only established himself as a key figure in their squad, but he’s gained valuable experience and won a whole host of trophies to develop a winning mentality, while also impressing at U21s level for England with 14 goals in 28 caps.

As per the club’s official statement, Villa have signed Elliott on an initial season-long loan deal, with an obligation to buy conditional on appearances this season.

According to the Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell, the obligation to buy clause will be triggered once the talented midfielder makes 10 appearances, while there have been indications that the transfer fee will be worth around £35m. Further, Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool have a buy-back clause included in the agreement.

Elliott becomes our third signing on deadline day following the arrivals of Victor Lindelof and Jadon Sancho, and so it’s been an important day for Villa after what has been a difficult summer and a dreadful start to the new Premier League season.

Hopefully now, with the transfer window closed and after reinforcements have arrived, we’ll be handed a much-needed boost to lift everyone ahead of our next game against Everton on September 13, and the international break will give our new arrivals time to settle in and adapt to Unai Emery’s demands.

Having failed to score a single goal in our opening three outings, both Sancho and Elliott will be pivotal in providing a fresh dynamic and additional quality in the final third, as they both possess the technical ability, creativity and flair to make a difference and have a positive influence on our play.

The test though will be on how effectively they can integrate and adapt to playing in Emery’s system and style of play, but these are undoubtedly two crucial signings that were needed, and it’s hoped that they can go on and have the desired impact this season, and potentially beyond.
