Aston Villa injury news: Key figure continues recovery work over break

Aston Villa defender Diego Carlos is continuing his hard work to make a swift recovery from his Achilles injury.

The 29-year-old suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during our win over Everton in August, and he has since been going through his rehabilitation to get back on the pitch.

Particularly with a new coach in Unai Emery in charge now, Carlos will be desperate to get back amongst his teammates and fight for his place in the Villa XI, and it hopefully appears as though he is continuing to make real progress.

As seen in the image below, he was back at Bodymoor Heath on Friday as he continues his gym work to stay in shape, and it’s hoped that he is constantly moving closer to making a full recovery and possibly is even able to return ahead of schedule barring any setbacks.

The next major step will be to see him back on the grass outside and joining in group training, as that will be a huge indication that he really is closing in on a comeback.

We’ve yet to see that, but with Villa travelling to Dubai for a winter training camp next month, it’s hoped that Carlos makes that trip and is with the rest of the group rather than continuing to work alone at the club’s training ground.

With his physicality, aggression and technical quality, Carlos could be an ideal fit for Emery in central defence, and so there is a lot of excitement and optimism about how much he will improve us when he returns.

For now though, the focus remains on his recovery and making sure he comes back when he’s ready and is as strong as he was previously. The World Cup break will no doubt give him a real chance to play a big role for us this season still, and so the hope is that he’ll get plenty of games under his belt before the campaign is over.
