Great news as long-term Villa injury absentee resumes group training

Aston Villa were handed a major lift in training this week as Emiliano Buendia has resumed working with the group at Bodymoor Heath.

The 27-year-old suffered a serious knee injury on the eve of the campaign last August, and has since been going through a gruelling rehabilitation process.

Having been kept up-to-date through most of the recovery work on social media, it has evidently been a difficult and testing time for the Argentine playmaker, who has worked hard and kept his spirits up during what must have been a horrible time for him.

However, while there has been a gradual increase of positive and promising updates, the one we’ve been waiting for finally came on Tuesday as Buendia was back in group training with his teammates for the first time since his setback.

As per the club’s tweet below and his own Instagram post, there was obvious joy and relief to be back amongst it and stepping up his recovery now, as he’ll no doubt target our pre-season schedule as being the perfect preparation for next season and getting back to playing an influential role for us.

It’s unclear, but seemingly highly unlikely, that we’ll see Buendia in our final few games of this campaign as it feels as though he won’t get the minutes he needs to get back to featuring at senior level, but hopefully his presence on the training pitch will galvanise and lift the rest of the squad as we face a crunch week.

First up is a trip to Olympiacos for the second leg of our Europa Conference League semi-final tie, as we look to overturn a 4-2 deficit to try and reach the final in Athens later this month.

Following that, we’ll host Liverpool in the Premier League knowing that a win will seal Champions League football for next season, and so Unai Emery will hope that despite all of the injury setbacks that we’ve suffered this season, we can still come through and achieve our goals.

Buendia was a vital player and almost ever-present for Emery after he was appointed last season, and given the technical quality, creativity, tenacity and energy that he brings to the Villa XI, it’s hoped that he can get back to his previous levels and improve further under the Villa boss to once again establish himself as a fundamental player for us.
