Important fitness boost for Villa as key man steps up return from injury

Aston Villa received an important boost in training on Monday as Jacob Ramsey returned to working with the rest of the group.

The 23-year-old hasn’t featured since our defeat to Liverpool on November 9, as he was forced off with a muscle injury and has been recovering since.

Although Unai Emery has great depth and quality at his disposal this season to cope with such absences, Ramsey has been a big loss given his importance in playing on the left side of our attack, and so we’ve missed his presence in the squad.

Fortunately, there was good news to start the week, as Ramsey posted on Instagram as seen in the image below, confirming that he’s back involved in group training, and hopefully now closing in on a return to action.

Prior to our win over Manchester City this past weekend, Emery confirmed that the Villa midfielder was progressing well and was close to training with the rest of the squad, and so this is now a key step forward in his return.

It remains to be seen if our trip to Newcastle Utd on Boxing Day comes too soon for Ramsey to be involved, but with a hectic schedule ahead as we also have the start of our FA Cup run to consider in January, it’s a timely boost to give us more depth and options to cope with the fixture list.

It’s been an injury-plagued run for Ramsey since last season, and that has subsequently limited his impact on the pitch as he’s managed just one goal and two assists in 16 appearances across all competitions so far in this campaign.

While his focus will be on getting back to peak condition and ultimately staying healthy as a priority, it will be such a crucial boost for Emery and Villa to have another top option to add a different dynamic to our attack and hopefully return to the form and consistency he showed after the Basque coach was appointed.
