Aston Villa injury news: Key figure set to miss two games after setback

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn is expected to miss our FA Cup tie with Stevenage this weekend, as well as the game vs Wolves on Wednesday night.

McGinn, 28, limped out in the second half of our win over Tottenham last weekend after appearing to pull up and grab him hamstring.

Naturally with that type of injury, it was always expected that he would be a major doubt for the midweek game at least, and it appears as though he could sit out another game with the issue too.

According to The Express and Star’s Matt Maher, the Scottish international is set to miss the clash with Stevenage after failing to make the matchday squad to face Wolves, and he’ll reassessed after the weekend to determine when he might be able to return.

With that last bit in mind, there is a chance that he could be sidelined for an extended period, but time will tell just how bad the injury is and whether or not Villa boss Unai Emery provides a clearer outlook on his recovery timeline on Wednesday when speaking to the media.

It’s a blow for Villa as McGinn has played an important role in that position on the right side of midfield, and given his characteristics and strengths, he certainly fits into Emery’s style of play well and the Villa boss will no doubt miss his presence.

Matty Cash will deputise for him against Wolves, and while it’s hoped that he comes in and performs well in his place, it’s crucial for Villa that McGinn isn’t out for too long as we’ll need as close to a full-strength squad as possible for the upcoming schedule.
