Crucial triple boost for Villa ahead of Club Brugge clash

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has provided positive injury news ahead of our Champions League clash with Club Brugge.

Villa take a 3-1 advantage into the second leg of our round-of-16 tie this week, but given the threat that the Belgian side posed in the first meeting, it’s clear that the job is far from done.

In turn, we’ll need another top performance from the team at Villa Park on Wednesday night to ensure we advance to the quarter-finals, and it would certainly help our cause if we had a healthier squad at Emery’s disposal.

Fortunately, he provided positive updates in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, as he confirmed that Emiliano Martinez, Amadou Onana and Marco Asensio would all be included in the matchday squad.

“They [Martinez and Asensio] are both in the squad,” he said, as per VillaTV. “Onana as well is coming back in the squad, Barkley is not. Malen and Andrés aren’t.

“And other players I think are in the squad. Of course, hopefully we can have all players available to play.”

Both Martinez and Asensio missed our win over Brentford last weekend due to injury, while Onana has been sidelined by an issue for some time.

Having that trio available again will not only strengthen our starting line-up, but it continues to bolster our bench having seen the likes of Matty Cash, Pau Torres and Boubacar Kamara all return over the past week or so too.

In turn, Villa are getting healthier and stronger just in time for what will be a crucial end to the campaign, as we look to compete across the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

Getting numbers back to allow Emery to rotate but also to give him different tactical solutions for each game will be fundamental, while the experience, leadership, quality and character of the likes of Martinez, Kamara and Asensio will be pivotal in giving us the best possible chance of achieving our objectives this season with crunch clashes with our rivals ahead.
