Aston Villa injury news: Matty Cash provides positive update on hamstring issue

Aston Villa defender Matty Cash has provided an update on his hamstring injury and has suggested that he’s close to recovering from the setback.

The 25-year-old sustained the problem just 27 minutes into our encounter with Man City at the start of the month, and subsequently missed our win over Southampton prior to the international break.

Having been absent for Poland’s recent UEFA Nations League games, Villa fans have been eager to hear an update to understand how long he may be sidelined for as we prepare for a trip to Elland Road to face Leeds Utd on Sunday.

Cash has now delivered a positive update on his injury, and it sounds as though he’s closing in on a return to action with Villa boss Steven Gerrard undoubtedly hopeful he’ll be available sooner rather than later.

“I had a little tight calf against Arsenal and I was running a bit different, putting more stress on my hamstring. I just tweaked my hammy a little bit – it was a grade three,” he told the Ben Foster Podcast (at the 44:45 mark).

“I had quite a lot of bleeding as well. I had a hamstring injury two, three years ago and it healed quite well. It’s been three weeks and I’m already out there running, on the balls, I’m pretty much doing everything.

“I feel great, so I think I’m nearly there.”

Particularly with L’Equipe reporting this week that Lucas Digne is also set for a spell on the sidelines with a suspected stress fracture in his ankle, Villa are likely to be without our first choice full-backs against Leeds this weekend.

Although Ashley Young has impressed while he has filled in at right-back, it’s certainly a far from ideal scenario for Gerrard to be missing two important players and he’ll hope that both Cash and Digne will be back at his disposal ahead of what is a hectic period in the fixture schedule.

It sounds as though from the update from Cash above that the Polish international isn’t too far away, and we’ll likely know more when Gerrard speaks to the media on Friday and shares the latest updates on those currently working their way back from injuries.
