Boost for Villa as key figure involved in training after injury

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery appears to have been handed an important boost amid our injury troubles in defence.

Villa face Tottenham in the FA Cup on Sunday evening, and Emery will be short-handed at the back with Matty Cash, Tyrone Mings and Pau Torres currently sidelined by injury.

January loan signing Axel Disasi is cup-tied and so will also be unavailable, and that in turn will likely force the Villa boss to continue with Boubacar Kamara as a centre-half as he continues to deputise alongside Ezri Konsa.

Although the Frenchman is capable of having a positive influence and impact in that role too, it of course isn’t his natural position and that makes us more vulnerable at the back, while we miss his quality in midfield.

In turn, we could do with getting key individuals back in defence, and while Disasi will be available for selection next week, there could be another important boost ahead of our Premier League encounter with Ipswich Town next week.

As seen in the image below, Mings was involved in training on Friday as he recovers from the knee injury he sustained in our win over West Ham Utd in the FA Cup last month, and it’s hoped that he isn’t far off from a return to action. It’s unclear at this stage how heavily involved he was as he may still be limited to a personalised session, but it’s certainly progress.

Jacob Ramsey hinted after the 31-year-old’s setback that he was expected to be out for a couple of weeks, and so hopefully Mings will be in contention for our upcoming games.

That will be vital for Villa, as not only will Kamara be able to move back into his usual midfield role, but Emery will get that all-important balance in defence with a left-sided centre-half alongside Konsa again to hopefully have a positive impact on our play in both phases.
