Villa signing confirmed to strengthen key area of Emery’s squad

Aston Villa have confirmed the season-long loan signing of Jadon Sancho from Manchester United in an important addition to Unai Emery’s squad.

The 25-year-old impressed during his time at Borussia Dortmund before joining Man Utd in 2021, and although he didn’t live up to expectations at Old Trafford, he’s since had decent loan spells back at Dortmund and with Chelsea last season.

As per the club’s official statement, Sancho has now joined Villa on a season-long loan deal, and it’s a crucial addition to the squad as he bolsters our options in the attacking third. It’s reported by The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell that Villa will cover around 80 percent of his salary, which will surely be in line with the club’s wage bill management plan as part of our settlement agreement with UEFA.

The England international will hopefully bring creativity, flair, technical quality and a goal threat as he adds a different dynamic to our attack, particularly at a time when Villa are struggling to show enough quality in that area of the pitch having failed to score a single goal in our opening three games of the Premier League season.

From Sancho’s perspective, it’s a big opportunity and challenge to prove himself on a consistent basis now, as this could shape the next phase of his career, whether that’s with us beyond this season or elsewhere.

Emery would undoubtedly have spoken to him prior to the deal being done to reiterate what he expects from the talented playmaker, and much like how we saw Marcus Rashford was rejuvenated by his loan move to Villa from Man Utd last season, it’s hoped that his former teammate follows the same path.

Having sold Jacob Ramsey this summer, Villa have had a glaring void to fill on the left wing to add balance to the side, and although Evann Guessand will hope to feature on that flank at times too, Sancho is a natural for the role and will likely be given a prominent part to play if he can showcase his best form on a regular basis.

Combined with the deadline day signings of Victor Lindelof and Harvey Elliott, Villa have added much-needed reinforcements ahead of the deadline to give everyone a lift after a woeful start to the campaign, and it’s hoped that we’ve added players with the ability to make a big impact in the coming months to continue our progression under Emery.
