Villa paired with interest in new target for key appointment

Aston Villa are reportedly keen to appoint Monchi in a key directorial role at the club after our move for Mateu Alemany failed to materialise.

Various names have been paired with a move to the club over the past few months as the ownership look to tweak the management infrastructure and put in place support for Unai Emery.

It was confirmed last month that despite strong links over a move to join us, Alemany ultimately opted to stay at Barcelona, and so there has been an interesting wait to determine whether or not Villa would look elsewhere or end their search there.

According to Marca’s Jose Felix Diaz, Villa ‘love’ Monchi, and Emery intends to have the current Sevilla sporting director alongside him with us after the Alemany move fell through.

It comes just a day after Marca reported that Monchi is considering an exit from Sevilla after a difficult year and concerns over his role, and so time will tell if that is with a view of taking up a new challenge with Villa this summer.

The 54-year-old has established an excellent reputation given the work that he has done at the La Liga club dating back to 2000, and although he had a difficult stint with Roma after moving there in 2017, he is still regarded as a top sporting director who has identified a lot of top talent over the years and helped assemble successful squads.

While he may not have emerged as Villa and Emery’s top option this summer after the pursuit of Alemany, if a deal can be done to bring him in as a key appointment to support the Boss’s vision and ideas moving forward, it could be a very influential addition that helps us get to the level we’re striving to reach on and off the pitch.
