Villa announce North Stand redevelopment plan, Sawiris issues key statement

Aston Villa have confirmed plans to redevelop the North Stand at Villa Park, which in turn will help increase the stadium’s capacity to over 50,000.

After previous plans for a full rebuild of the North Stand in 2022 were shelved due to the scale of the project and issues with local infrastructure in relation to transport links, it has clearly been a point of emphasis for ownership and management since, and now it appears as though the club are in a position to move forward with their new plan.

As per the club’s statement, the North Stand will be refurbished and expanded to allow for an increase in capacity with over 12,000 seats set to be available, and coupled with ongoing work on the other three stands at Villa Park, the total capacity of the stadium will increase to over 50,000.

Villa stress that the works required will not result in a decrease in capacity while they are carried out and so fans will still be able to attend in the North Stand, while there is a commitment from Mayor Richard Parker to upgrade the facilities and capabilities of Witton Station to accommodate the increase in number of fans attending games.

It’s added that Villa are now in a position to move forward with the planning process, and Executive Chairman, Nassef Sawiris, has shared his delight over the plans and reiterated ownership’s commitment and desire to continuing to strengthen the club and increase our ability to compete at the top level both on and off the pitch.

“Since Wes and I became owners of this storied Club in 2018 and Atairos joined us as partners in 2024, we have shared a clear ambition: to restore Aston Villa to its rightful position competing at the highest levels of English and European football, and to transform the Club into a global brand and European powerhouse,” he said, as noted in the club’s statement above. “Thanks to the Mayor’s commitment to develop Witton Station and to improve local transport links, this project will mark an important milestone in the Club’s journey to becoming a world-class sports and entertainment venue. A bigger, better North Stand will not only allow many more Villans to see their team in person, improving matchday experience, but will also dramatically improve the Club’s ability to invest and compete in the long term.”

Given the history and prestige around Villa Park, it would have been a difficult decision to an extent over whether or not Villa can continue to move forward at our current home, with so much emphasis and importance placed on having a new and bigger stadium to increase revenue.

We’ve seen several other clubs in the Premier League go down that route, but ultimately Sawiris and the Villa management team have opted to increase capacity and remain at Villa Park, putting in the work to continue to transform it into a more modern stadium to meet the needs of our growing fanbase and success.

The ability to increase capacity will not only help improve the atmosphere with more fans packed in to watch the team perform, but it’s hoped that in conjunction with the ongoing work around the stadium, including the new shop and entertainment facilities, that Villa will continue to increase revenue and create an improved matchday experience.

That in turn will hopefully directly benefit and improve our finances from a sporting perspective when it comes to PSR, FFP and the ongoing balancing act that Monchi and his team have to go through to keep us competitive on the pitch, and judging from our form at home so far this season, we’ll continue to strengthen and make Villa Park into a fortress.
