Crucial development touted as Villa plot further summer signings

After weeks of concern over PSR, Aston Villa reportedly no longer need to sell players in order to be compliant, and the focus now switches to making further signings.

Speculation has been rife in recent weeks over our position in relation to PSR and how close we were to breaching the parameters, and thus risking a sanction next season.

It arguably played a key part in the sale of Tim Iroegbunam this month as he joined Everton, while Douglas Luiz is expected to follow him out of the exit door in the coming days or weeks and there are ongoing rumours of other exits too.

Villa have been astute in the market though to not only dismiss those PSR concerns, but to also try and strengthen the squad as a whole and hopefully end the summer transfer window in a better position with a better squad compared to how we started it.

As per The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Villa have now surpassed the requirement to sell players in order to be on the right side of PSR, and now the club will look to make ‘tactical improvements’ to Unai Emery’s squad.

That will be music to the ears of Villa fans as we’ll hopefully now see marquee signings made through July and August to help us reach the next level of competitiveness, but naturally only if they are considered by Emery as being able to significantly improve us.

Time will tell if we opt to sell players anyway next month in order to keep balancing our books and to strengthen our spending power to bring in preferred options for the Villa boss, but ultimately we’ve seemingly put ourselves in a great position for the rest of the summer.

The expectation is that there will be a flurry of activity from Villa in the coming days as speculation has linked us with various moves including welcoming both Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling Jr from Juventus as part of the deal taking Luiz in the opposite direction, while Ian Maatsen is believed to be on the verge of completing a move to join us from Chelsea, as per reports.

Given our need to address other areas of the squad though and as we look to not only replicate and establish our position in the top four in the Premier League but also try to be competitive in the Champions League, as excellent a job that Emery, Monchi and the Villa management team have done so far, they will have plenty more work to do and will be striving to bring in more new faces to strengthen the group.

  1. It’s all very well getting numbers in but I am concerned about the quality not the quantity what about the other top teams there paying a lot more for top class players

    1. I think/hope we’ll see a couple of marquee signings next month in addition to Maatsen. PSR was clearly a pressing concern before end of June, fingers crossed we’ve got that flexibility to spend now and reinforce. UTV
