Aston Villa have confirmed that Alex Moreno has left the club on a permanent basis to join Girona, and he’s bid a classy farewell to the club.
The 32-year-old joined us from Real Betis in January 2023 and went on to make 48 appearances for the club, scoring three goals and providing three assists to go with his defensive work.

Hopes were certainly high for the Spaniard as he made an immediately positive impression after arriving, but an injury at the end of that campaign derailed his time with us and has ultimately ended with a departure this summer.
Moreno spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, and with the expectation that he would move on permanently this summer, the club’s official statement has now confirmed that he’s joined Girona. Reports suggest that there is no transfer fee involved, while Villa are said to have a sell-on clause in the agreement.
It’s a shame to see the Spanish defender leave as having started his time at Villa so well, it was felt that he was an ideal option for Unai Emery as he fit his system and style of play so effectively.
However, that hamstring injury was a real blow for Moreno, as that in turn opened the door for Lucas Digne to firstly re-establish himself in the side as our first-choice left-back again, before Ian Maatsen was signed last summer to push him further down the pecking order.
With Digne signing a new contract this summer and Maatsen continuing to push to displace him and become our long-term solution in that role, there simply wasn’t any sense for either the club or Moreno to stay together despite featuring early on in pre-season, and so this is a sensible move for all concerned which will hopefully work out for the best.
As seen below, Moreno posted a classy goodbye message on social media, and it unsurprisingly has had an amazing reaction from Villa fans, who were no doubt fond of him and will wish him well for the future.
