Interest touted in influential Villa figure but exit seems highly unlikely

Aston Villa reportedly face transfer interest for Morgan Rogers from Chelsea this summer, but unsurprisingly, it’s added that we have no desire to sell.

The 22-year-old has continued to impress this season after making a positive impact in the second half of the last campaign following his move from Middlesbrough.

Rogers was a priority target for Unai Emery and they’ve since shown why, with the England international scoring flourishing under the Villa boss having contributed 17 goals and 14 assists in 66 appearances across all competitions.

With such a bright future ahead of him, it’s hoped that Rogers is a driving force in Emery’s Villa side for many more years to come, but according to The Independent, Chelsea are keen to bolster their attacking options this summer and have set their sights on Rogers being the solution.

From a purely football perspective, Villa will have absolutely no desire or reason to sell Rogers at this point, as he has shown impressive progression thus far and has firmly established himself as a key figure in the side with so much room for improvement still, and Emery has evidently shown he’s the right man to help him fulfil that potential.

However, the Independent’s reasoning for the speculation is that we could face financial pressure this summer to avoid breaching PSR parameters, and particularly if we fail to qualify for the Champions League again next season, that could heighten the threat of having to sell prized assets to balance our books.

Time will tell how the remainder of the current campaign plays out, as although we have work to do to close the gap on our rivals, there is still a chance that we secure a top-five finish in the Premier League.

Either way though, it seems highly unlikely that Rogers will be the one to have an exit approved given how important he is to Emery, and so while Chelsea’s interest may well be legitimate given the Villa ace has been excellent this season and is likely wanted by many other clubs, that doesn’t necessarily mean that a deal could, or should, be done.
