Aston Villa transfer news: Four key areas Villa will look to address this summer

Aston Villa are reportedly prioritising a midfielder this summer, but with additional areas set to be assessed with further reinforcements for the squad possible.

As per BirminghamLive, Villa still have work to do this summer after securing the signing of Emiliano Buendia from Norwich City, as we look to strengthen the squad and continue to push on and compete at a high level.

Bolstering our midfield options is a priority, but it’s noted that a bid hasn’t been made for either Pape Matar Sarr or James Ward-Prowse as of yet, despite recent speculation suggesting otherwise.

Beyond the midfield, full-back depth is also an issue with a lack of competition for Matt Targett at left-back, while there are still question marks over Frederic Guilbert’s future at the club as he prepares to return from his loan spell with Strasbourg.

With Neil Taylor and Ahmed Elmohamady leaving this summer after their contracts expired, Villa do need to fill those voids but it remains to be seen if they consider internal solutions or if they look elsewhere.

Smith is also said to be waiting to assess his options up front, as Wesley and Keinan Davis will hope to make a positive impression on their return to pre-season training in order to keep their respective places in the squad.

Ollie Watkins will no doubt continue to lead the line for Villa after an impressive debut campaign with us last year, but with Wesley working his way back from a lengthy injury lay-off and Davis struggling to score goals despite making positive impacts off the bench last season, more could be needed in that department to ensure we have enough firepower.

With that in mind, there is still a fair amount for Villa to do in the coming weeks and months, but we’ve made an excellent start with the addition of Buendia. It’s hoped that we can continue to add these stand-out talents to address specific issues in the squad, and that in turn should continue to raise the level as we hope to battle for a place in Europe next season.
