Talks set to continue as Villa pursue signing of talented youngster

Aston Villa have reportedly seen an offer rejected for Toulouse starlet Jaydee Canvot but will continue their pursuit of the talented youngster.

The 18-year-old has come through the youth ranks with the French side and emerged as a top prospect, despite having only made 20 appearances at senior level thus far.

His form and progress has seemingly caught the attention of Villa, as The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports that we’ve had an offer for the talented starlet rejected, but talks are set to continue as we attempt to find a breakthrough in negotiations.

Canvot has been capped from U16s to U19s level by France and has a bright future ahead of him if he continues to develop and improve his game, while he has the versatility to play as a defensive midfielder in addition to his more natural role as a centre-half.

Further, he seemingly ticks a lot of important boxes when it comes to the profile of talent that Villa are looking to add to our ranks, with his defensive qualities matched with technical ability to offer an influence in both phases of the game.

Should it prove to be a successful pursuit, it will be a continuation of a clear transfer strategy from the club in recent windows, and particularly this summer, as we continue to identify and acquire top young talent with a long-term plan in mind.

Yasin Ozcan, Zepiqueno Redmond and Modou Keba Cisse have all been signed over the past few months, hopefully with the intention of establishing themselves in the first-team squad under Unai Emery at varying stages of their respective careers, and Canvot would likely follow a similar path, depending on what fee is involved in his potential signing.

In contrast, should they fail to make a breakthrough at Villa, there is a business angle to these moves too as we look to make profit on them in the future, and so it will be interesting to see if Villa can fend off potential competition, land Canvot’s signature and oversee his development in the coming years.

With competition for places fierce in that department, albeit we could do with adding a more senior option as right-sided centre-half depth, it’s an intriguing transfer strategy that will hopefully prove to be successful both in the short-term and long-term future for Villa.
