Villa paired with interest in familiar transfer target to bolster attacking options

Aston Villa are reportedly once again interested in the possible signing of Joao Felix if he is to leave Chelsea this week.

Villa have been linked with a swoop for the 25-year-old in the previous two transfer windows, and evidently a move to join us hasn’t materialised as he’s had spells at Chelsea and Barcelona since previously joining Atletico Madrid in 2019.

Nevertheless, Unai Emery has never been shy in expressing how highly he rates the Portuguese international, and few would deny that he has the ability and quality to potentially be a great fit for our system and style of play.

Felix has scored seven goals and provided two assists in 20 appearances for Chelsea so far this season, and now Fabrizio Romano reports that Villa are one of many clubs who are keeping tabs on his situation at Stamford Bridge heading into the final days of the January transfer window.

He adds that his agent, Jorge Mendes, is talking to various clubs and so time will tell if Villa are one of them and become a serious option, or if once again he opts to either snub our interest and stay at Chelsea, or move elsewhere.

Villa have already bolstered Emery’s attacking options this month with the signing of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund, but with Jaden Philogene departing the club, that was an upgrade as part of a one out, one in strategy to improve the squad.

With Emiliano Buendia seemingly on the verge of joining Bayer Leverkusen on loan for the remainder of the season, that would free up another spot in the final third, and so it remains to be seen if Felix will be the upgrade that Emery is seeking in that department.

While we’ve already been active this month with incomings and outgoings, it promises to be a busy final week of the transfer window as we have priorities elsewhere to address too, namely our defence given the exit of Diego Carlos and injuries suffered by Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings.

In what is becoming a familiar scenario though, Felix is a name being paired with a potential move to join us, and we’ll see if this time round he is committed to the project and proposal laid out by Villa and Emery, should our reported interest be serious, or if we potentially waste more time on a pursuit that doesn’t ultimately develop into a move.
