Two touted options as Villa look to strengthen key area of squad

Aston Villa are reportedly considering one of Joao Felix or Marco Asensio to bolster Unai Emery’s attacking options ahead of the transfer deadline.

Villa have already been active in that department this month, with Jaden Philogene departing while Donyell Malen was signed to improve the squad and hopefully make a key impact.

With Morgan Rogers, Jacob Ramsey, Leon Bailey and Malen providing options in the final third, it seems Villa are well set in that area, but as we look to continue to compete on multiple fronts, another reinforcement could arrive.

That will become a more prominent need with Jhon Duran expected to complete a move to Al-Nassr in the coming days, and with Villa receiving a significant boost in funds, it could lead to a swoop to fill that void.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Villa are in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a potential move for Asensio, and he adds that while the Spaniard is one of the top targets for us in the last few days of the window, the player himself is keen on the switch.

The 29-year-old joined PSG in 2023, and with two goals and four assists in 16 appearances so far this season, he continues to make an impact, albeit his role has diminished in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Romano adds that Villa have also made an enquiry for Felix who has previously been linked with joining us, with discussions seemingly continuing over terms to try and reach an agreement.

The Portuguese international has bagged seven goals and two assists in 20 outings this season, but he has also fallen down the pecking order in recent weeks and an exit appears to be a genuine option for him this month.

Time will tell who Villa opt to prioritise and who becomes a more realistic option, but it’s clear that we need something more in the final third if Duran leaves, and with a lack of alternative names being touted currently, it could be one of these two who adds competition and depth in our attacking unit.

It’s been widely reported dating back to last summer that Emery rates Felix very highly and so he may be the top choice, but if an agreement can’t be reached, perhaps Asensio is the back-up option to ensure we don’t leave ourselves short.
