Doubt over permanent Villa switch as loanee linked with alternative move

Aston Villa loanee Nicolo Zaniolo is reportedly attracting interest from Fiorentina as a permanent move to join us is seemingly unlikely this summer.

The 24-year-old arrived on a season-long loan deal from Galatasaray last August, while there were conditions within the agreement that could have seen it become a permanent switch.

Zaniolo though has struggled to showcase his best form on a consistent basis this year, scoring just three goals and providing no assists in 38 appearances across all competitions.

While the goals he has scored proved to be important ones, the Italian international hasn’t had the impact that was hoped for, and the expectation at this stage at least is that he will return to Galatasaray at the end of the season.

According to Calciomercato, Fiorentina have opened contacts about a possible swoop for him this summer, as it’s reiterated that the clause for Villa to sign him on a permanent basis is unlikely to be triggered, and so he could be set for a return to Serie A next season.

It could come down to Unai Emery first though as to whether or not he wishes to keep Zaniolo in his squad beyond this season, and so talks could still be on the cards with Galatasaray to try and reach a new agreement if the Villa boss is eager to extend his stay.

However, given the lack of return this year when he has been involved, it has to be said that there are surely better options for us out there who perhaps fit our style and structure more effectively, and are capable of making a more significant impact on our performances and results.

Zaniolo has been an important figure for us this season though, as although it’s been an underwhelming return in terms of his goal involvements, Emery has shown trust in him when he’s been available to play a key role.

Nevertheless, it does feel as though a split is the best outcome for all concerned, and if he does indeed move on, it will be fascinating to see who Emery and Villa have lined up to fill that void this summer.
