Aston Villa transfer news: Report claims two forwards on summer agenda

Aston Villa will reportedly look to sign two forwards this summer to bolster our options in attack, particularly in the wide positions.

It’s been a season of progress for Villa and Dean Smith, as we’ve gone from surviving on the last day of the season last year to now hopefully pushing for a top-half Premier League finish this time round.

However, particularly in recent months and more so after skipper Jack Grealish was sidelined by injury, we have struggled to show consistent quality in the final third to trouble sides and that has led to a major dip in form.

Villa have scored 43 goals in our 30 league games thus far, with only Everton scoring less out of the 10 sides above us in the standings currently.

Having been one of the teams to watch earlier in the season having earned positive reviews from countless pundits due to our style of play and attacking threat, a run of 10 goals in our last 12 games has reflected our struggles going forward.

According to Football Insider, steps could be taken this summer to address that lack of quality as it’s suggested that Villa are eyeing two wide forwards in the transfer window and are expected to spend big in order to acquire their preferred targets.

Smith has shown an unwillingness to adjust his formation and system this season as he has stuck with a 4-2-3-1 despite our ongoing issues, with a 4-4-2 perhaps needed to just freshen things up and give the opposition a different look to deal with.

If that is the continued case moving forward though, then by adding more quality particularly out wide to support Ollie Watkins and Grealish in a four-man attack, it seems like a sensible strategy from the club and hopefully one that produces impressive results next season.

For now though, it’s hoped that the Villa captain can return to play a key role in the final handful of Premier League games to help us finish on a positive note, and we can then look to kick on again next season seemingly with new signings arriving to give us a boost.
