Aston Villa have confirmed that talented young defender Sil Swinkels has joined Exeter City on a season-long loan deal.
The 21-year-old impressed at youth level for Villa after joining us from Vitesse in 2020, as he was part of the squad that secured FA Youth Cup success the following year.

Having made two appearances for the first-team, the Dutch centre-half has been involved in the senior squad on a number of occasions, and he certainly looks to have the characteristics and raw talent to be a top player in the future.
With his opportunities at Villa to test himself likely to be few and far between, the club have confirmed that Swinkels has joined Exeter City on loan for the upcoming campaign, and it will hopefully prove to be a sensible decision that helps him continue to improve and develop his game with a prominent role at a challenging level.
He’ll get the chance to build on his loan stint at Bristol Rovers last season, and while he’s now outgrown the youth set-up with us, with Pau Torres, Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Lamare Bogarde and Yasin Ozcan ahead of him in the pecking order at Villa currently, coupled with a likely new addition in that department in the coming weeks, this should suit all concerned.
What will be interesting to see though is whether or not his form for Exeter can help him force his way into Unai Emery’s plans in the long run, as there is naturally an option we’re seeing more and more of now at the club where we’re selling on our top young talents to help balance our books and fund our own signings.
A productive loan spell at Exeter will only increase Swinkels’ valuation, and so there will be intrigue next summer when he returns to Villa and a decision is made on what the next step in his career looks like.
