No agreement in place yet for long-standing top Villa transfer target

Despite putting in significant groundwork already, Aston Villa reportedly don’t yet have an agreement in place with Rosenborg to sign Sverre Nypan.

The 18-year-old starlet has made quite the impression already in his short career thus far, as he’s not only made a positive start at senior level for Rosenborg, but he’s broken into the Norway U21s set-up too which in turn suggests that he has a bright future ahead of him for club and country.

Reports in April noted that Villa’s President of Football Operations, Monchi, had travelled to Norway to watch Nypan in action, while talks were said to have been held with his father as we pushed to reach a deal to sign him this summer.

At that time, there was a positive feeling around our transfer pursuit as evidently we rate Nypan highly and believe him to be a great fit for what Unai Emery is building at the club, but doubts emerged earlier this week as it was reported in Norway that Villa’s interest had decreased in recent weeks and that in turn had opened the door for rivals to pounce.

According to The Athletic, no agreement is in place as of yet, and so time will tell if the top talent is simply still considering his options or has decided that Villa might not be the best next step for him.

It’s unclear at this stage what has has caused this change in the situation, be it Villa’s failure to qualify for the Champions League or our more pressing requirement to sell before June 30 in order to comply with PSR and ensure we’re adhering to UEFA’s SCR too.

If it’s the latter, our incomings are likely going to have to wait until July and so perhaps we’ll remain in a strong position to sign Nypan until then.

However, if it’s due to the Champions League factor or that the talented youngster has had his head turned by another top club, then so be it. Villa and Emery have identified him as a potentially key piece in our future plans, made our pitch and done our best to convince him that joining us would be the best next step in his career.

If Nypan doesn’t believe that to be the case, we wish him well wherever he ends up and we’ll switch our focus elsewhere. If he does ultimately join us as some point this summer, we’ll have landed another top young prospect with a big future ahead of him and with the capability to increase his value significantly in the years ahead if we are forced to consider the financial aspect of such a deal too.
