Aston Villa have reportedly had an £18m plus add-ons bid rejected by Southampton for defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
The 24-year-old came through the youth ranks at Manchester City before joining the Saints in 2023 initially on loan, but having sealed a permanent switch he has gone on to make 134 appearances for the club.
Along with his defensive qualities, he has scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in those outings, showing his attacking prowess at the other end of the pitch on set-pieces. Further, he scored on his debut for England in 2024, while he had spells at Blackburn, Anderlecht, Burnley and Stoke City having been limited to just eight appearances at senior level for Man City.

According to The Athletic, Villa have set their sights on him in the closing stages of the transfer window as we look to replace the outgoing Ezri Konsa, but it’s reported that our initial bid worth £18m plus add-ons has been rejected by Southampton.
It’s added that Villa are monitoring three options to fill the void that will be left behind by Konsa once he completes his £51m+ move to Arsenal this week, and while Hardwood-Bellis has now emerged as one of them, it’s not stated who the other two are with speculation rife over potential targets.
Time will tell if Villa opt to return with an improved bid to try and prise the commanding centre-half away from his current club, or if they feel that there is more value to be had by pursuing one of the alternative options.
Whoever ultimately emerges as the priority target, it’s clear that we need to bring in a new defender before the transfer deadline to add competition and depth alongside the likes of Pau Torres, Tyrone Mings and most notably Victor Lindelof in terms of playing on the right side of that centre-half pairing, and it remains to be seen if Hardwood-Bellis is Unai Emery’s preferred option, in which case a higher offer will no doubt swiftly follow.
It would certainly fit the mould of our transfer work this summer as Villa look to add talented younger players to start a new cycle with many of our stalwarts heading out of the exit door, while it would likely be a reasonable salary addition to our wage bill for a homegrown player, so there will be an intriguing wait to see what develops.
