Villa tipped to make approach for midfielder on free transfer

Aston Villa are reportedly set to make an imminent approach to sign Youri Tielemans on a free transfer after his exit from Leicester City.

The 26-year-old will become a free agent when his current contract expires at the end of the month, with the Foxes confirming that he will be part of the group that moves on.

Since joining in 2019, initially on loan, Tielemans went on to make 195 appearances for the club, scoring 28 goals and providing 26 assists as he became a fundamental player for Leicester.

However, he was unable to help them avoid relegation this past season, and so he’ll now be looking to start a new chapter in his career from this summer onwards.

According to The Athletic, Villa have joined the race to sign the Belgian international, with the report adding that Unai Emery wants to move quickly to get a potential deal done with competition expected to be high, and so an approach is expected soon.

With Villa looking to continue to progress and climb the Premier League table, as well as competing for domestic silverware and preparing for what will hopefully be a deep run in the Europa Conference League, competition and depth will be needed right across the squad to ensure we’re competitive across the board.

The midfield quartet of John McGinn, Boubacar Kamara, Douglas Luiz and Jacob Ramsey became one of our biggest strengths last season, but with injuries testing us at times and forcing Emery to shuffle the pack, he will undoubtedly want more quality at his disposal to provide him with alternative solutions.

Tielemans largely had a season to forget this past year, as did many of the Leicester players, but with his technical quality and what he is capable of bringing to our midfield, it could be a smart addition to the squad, particularly on a free transfer, as we look to bring in significant reinforcements this summer to bolster the group.
