Why key decision is another statement of intent from Villa and influential figure

After signing a new contract at Aston Villa to keep him with us until 2029, Emiliano Martinez’s decision is a statement of intent from him and the club.

As per the club’s official statement, the 31-year-old shot-stopper has committed his future to us for the next five years, and given his previous deal was still set to run until 2027, it was a decision made with belief, trust and confidence in what we’re building.

From Martinez’s perspective, it’s a clear indication that he believes the club are in a position to match his ambition in the coming years. Admittedly, if things were to fall off, there is obviously the chance that he may opt to move on before 2029, but as we continue to build a foundation, momentum and consistent progress under Unai Emery, he has bought into our vision.

Effectively, this five-year deal will see him continue to be a fundamental figure in the cycle that we’re currently in. With other pivotal figures signed to long-term deals already, we have a core to the squad in place, and that in turn enables our management to continue to strengthen around them.

In turn, that will hopefully allow us to continue to strengthen and improve what Emery already has at his disposal, and subsequently it should strengthen our ability to compete at a higher level.

For Villa though, agreeing new terms with a player of Martinez’s stature and significance, is also a clear signal to other players in the current squad and prospective transfer targets, that we are continuing to build something special.

To have the world’s best goalkeeper buy in again and extend his commitment shows that we have a plan and strategy with substance to get this club as far as we can go and enjoy tangible success in the coming years, and that in turn should help to continue to attract a high calibre of transfer target and convince others to follow suit in signing new long-term deals when their time comes.

Martinez has won it all with Argentina. His winning mentality, leadership and experience will be critical in helping to guide us forward on this upward trajectory, and so he will have an integral part in our bid to continue to improve on the progress we’ve already achieved since Emery took charge.

Speaking of the Villa boss, he himself committed to a new contract earlier this summer to also secure his future with us until 2029.

Villa not only have the infrastructure above and around the Basque coach to make this a winning project, but gradually, we’re maintaining and improving the pieces in his squad to make his ambitions and objectives a reality too.

There is no doubt that he wanted Martinez to remain as a pillar of his side moving forward, and so this was another crucial piece of business done to allow him to continue to construct his own winning squad at Villa. As he reminded us at his press conference on Friday, Emery doesn’t want to waste time. He’s here to win, and each year we’ll hopefully edge closer to being capable of achieving the success he, Martinez and others have in mind.

In turn, in conjunction with our performance on and off the pitch from a sporting and commercial aspect, Villa continue to make statement moves, and Martinez is now the latest to continue to build the feel-good factor at the club and heighten the optimism and belief in this path that we’re on.
