Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has named John McGinn as his new captain, with Emiliano Martinez set to become our vice-captain.
Having arrived midway through last season, Gerrard opted to leave the armband with Tyrone Mings, but he was open publicly about reassessing the situation over the summer.

After considering his options, the Villa boss has now decided to make a change, and as per the club’s official site, it has been confirmed that McGinn is now the new captain.
Additionally, Martinez has been announced as vice-captain, while Ashley Young will take on the role of club captain.
It could be argued that given the level of competition in midfield, it isn’t certain that McGinn will play every game and so perhaps Martinez might have been a sensible choice as he’ll undoubtedly be a pivotal figure in the side and will be a regular.
Nevertheless, Gerrard has clearly backed the Scottish midfielder to be a lynchpin of his XI moving forward, and it’s now hoped that the added responsibility that comes with being captain will see him take his game on to a higher level.
From Mings’ perspective, he has taken the news professionally and admirably, and for him, it’s hoped that he can focus on his form moving forward now as he also faces a battle to keep his place in the starting line-up this season.
Time will tell if this switch is the right call, but what we do know for now is that Gerrard is continuing to stamp his mark on this Villa squad and moulding it one that he thinks will enjoy success, and so hopefully we’ll see more progress this year.
Gerrard on McGinn
“John has demonstrated that he is ready to take on the captaincy through his performances on the pitch combined with his attitude and application in training. He is a popular member of the dressing room who sets high standards and expectations of himself.
Gerrard on Martinez, Young
“Emi is a respected senior member of the squad while Ashley Young’s experience speaks for itself and he is the perfect ambassador for the first team.
Gerrard on Mings
“Naturally, I have had to have a discussion with Tyrone Mings and have explained my reasons for making this decision. More importantly, I believe that not having the responsibility of the captaincy will allow Tyrone to focus more on his own game which can only benefit him and the team.”
