Aston Villa have confirmed that John McGinn has signed a new contract that will keep him with us until 2027.
The 28-year-old joined us from Hibernian in August 2018, and has since gone on to make 183 appearances for the club, scoring 17 goals and providing 26 assists.

While he has struggled with his form at times, McGinn has largely been a pivotal figure for us throughout his time at Villa, and now as captain, he will undoubtedly play a leading role as we look to kick on under Unai Emery.
As per the club’s statement, the Scottish international has put pen to paper on a new deal that keeps him at Villa until 2027, and so he now joins a number of other key players in being on long-term deals as we have operated impressively to ensure the core of the squad is secured before building around them.
Although McGinn himself consistently noted last season that he needs to improve his numbers in terms of goal contributions, there is no doubt that he improved significantly following Emery’s arrival last year.
Whether it was playing on the right side of midfield with more freedom to get forward or being deployed in a more defensive role in a central position, he continued to do what was best for the team and what was needed from the manager, and he certainly stepped his game up and improved too.
In turn, there’s excitement about how much further he can kick on under the Spanish tactician in their first full season working together, and with his future now secured, he can fully focus on matters on the pitch and helping Villa to be as successful as possible moving forward.
As one of the core group that helped us get promotion from the Championship to now lead us into Europe, McGinn is of course a firm fans’ favourite, and it’s hoped that we will see him lift silverware in our pursuit of success in the coming years having now signed his new deal.
