Official: Villa agree Wesley loan deal as he returns to Club Brugge

Aston Villa striker Wesley has sealed a return to Club Brugge in a season-long loan deal ahead of the transfer deadline next week.

The 24-year-old joined us from the Belgian side in 2019 and has gone on to score six goals in 26 appearances since.

He was limited to just three appearances last season though and 22 the previous year after suffering a serious knee injury, and so it has been a struggle for him to get back to full health, fitness and form over the past 18 months.

While he has now been involved with the first-team squad since the back-end of last season, Villa have decided that they are ready to send him out on loan to try and get back to his best.

As per the club’s official site, the Brazilian forward has rejoined Club Brugge, where he will now spend the rest of this season before returning to Villa next summer.

It’s a smart move from the club in many ways, as ultimately it gives Wesley the chance to play regularly, get his full match fitness back and try and rediscover the form that earned him a move to England in the first place.

He’ll be in familiar surroundings so will hopefully settle quickly and find his feet, and the hope is that he will be back next season to try and prove a point and showcase his best in a Villa shirt.

Time will tell whether or not that happens, but with Dean Smith able to call upon Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins to lead the line this season, it seems as though this deal works out for all concerned and it will hopefully prove to be a positive one for all parties when we reflect back next summer.
