Official: Villa announce Wesley loan deal to Internacional

Aston Villa have confirmed that striker Wesley has joined Internacional on a 12-month loan deal.

The Brazilian forward spent the first half of this season at Club Brugge, but with that switch seemingly not having the desired results in terms of him getting the opportunity to play significant minutes, he has made a fresh move to try and get his career back on track.

Wesley was sidelined by a long-term injury in early 2020, and although he made his much-anticipated comeback at the end of last season, his lack of playing time at Villa Park ultimately led to the sensible decision to go out on loan and play regularly again to rediscover his confidence and form.

With Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings now ahead of him in the pecking order under Steven Gerrard, he would have struggled to break into the side had he simply returned to us, and so he has now found a new solution.

While things haven’t worked out on his return to Belgium, as per the club’s official site, he has now returned to Brazil with Internacional on a 12-month loan deal and will no doubt be desperate to once again play regular football and rediscover the quality that earned him a move to Villa in the first place.

The 25-year-old’s contract with Villa runs until 2024, and so it remains to be seen if this latest switch provides him with the foundation to earn a second chance at the club, or perhaps we look to offload him next January off the back of a successful loan spell that either convinces Internacional to sign him outright, or attracts interest from elsewhere.

For now though, we wish Wesley all the best at his new club, as while things haven’t gone to plan for him in a Villa shirt yet, it will be great to see him enjoying his football again following the desperately difficult and unfortunate times he’s suffered with off the back of that serious injury setback.
