Villa ace withdrawn from international duty for ongoing injury issue

England have confirmed that Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has returned to the club for rehabilitation on an ongoing injury issue.

The 28-year-old was called up for the international break as part of the England squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.

However, as per their official statement, he has now returned to Villa for rehabilitation treatment for an existing issue, as following an assessment whilst with the England staff, it has been deemed best for him to not take part.

Both Unai Emery and Watkins have noted that he had a knee issue over the summer, and that played a part in him missing our entire pre-season schedule.

The knock-on effect of that has been evident as our talisman has struggled in front of goal so far this season, and so it’s hoped that having now been given an opportunity to rest, recover and regroup over the break, he’ll be in much better place health and fitness wise when we face Everton on September 14.

After missing big chances in our defeat to Arsenal, Watkins again misfired as we bounced back at Leicester City last weekend. While he continues to play a pivotal role for the team with his work ethic and defensive contribution by leading from the front, his goals are imperative too and it’s hoped he can rediscover his finishing touch sooner rather than later.

Fortunately, Jhon Duran has come off the bench to make a decisive contribution in two of our opening three Premier League games this season, but Watkins will undoubtedly have a major role to play this year, and it’s crucial for Emery and the team that we get him back in form.

With just under a fortnight now at home and working with Villa’s medical and coaching staff at Bodymoor Heath, that will hopefully get Watkins right, and although he’ll of course be disappointed to miss out on representing England, it’s hoped that this proves to be vital for his season in getting back to his best.
