Why smart Villa move will continue to help progression under Emery

A busy summer lies ahead for Aston Villa as we navigate the transfer market, but there was a bit of in-house business that was taken care of this week as Tyrone Mings penned a contract extension.

With just 12 months remaining on his previous deal, the 32-year-old is believed to now be under contract with Villa until June 2027, and so there will be a continuation of what has been an amazing journey thus far.

“We are very happy that Tyrone has extended his contract with Aston Villa,” Monchi said, as per the club’s statement confirming the news. “We are delighted that he will continue to be a part of our journey.”

From promotion back to the Premier League to qualifying for Europe before making our bow in the Champions League, the last six years has been incredible to watch as a fan, and Mings has been through it all with us as one our leading figures in the squad.

Having worked tirelessly to come back from a devastating knee injury the season before last, a setback that sidelined him for over a year, he proved in this past campaign that he’s overcome that major hurdle and is capable of playing a pivotal role for Unai Emery once again.

In turn, after putting pen to paper on a new contract to extend his stay at Villa and dismiss any doubts over his future, Mings will continue to be a fundamental presence in the squad, giving us a more solid defensive option when needed against certain opposition, just as he did in the season just concluded.

The commanding centre-half didn’t experience defeat in any of his 14 Premier League appearances last year, and although it isn’t a one-man job and others undoubtedly contributed to that run, it says a lot about the influence and impact that Mings has when he’s organising and marshalling our backline.

Emery received criticism at times last season for leaving Mings out of certain games where he would have been critical, notably away at Manchester United on the final day of the league campaign as well as our FA Cup semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace at Wembley.

Those are the type of clashes that Mings’ defensive qualities might have come to the fore in, and hopefully having now sorted his future out to commit for a longer period, we’ll see him used effectively next season alongside Pau Torres.

The pair provide us with excellent competition and alternative tactical solutions with the Spaniard often preferred when we’re likely to dominate possession and in need of composure to dictate tempo and build out from the back, and to have that ability to adapt in such a key position is such a positive for us when competing on multiple fronts.

Further, with talented youngster Yasin Ozcan joining up with the group this summer, that’s some mentor for him to have to help settle at Villa and learn from, with Mings’ influence going beyond the pitch as he’s undoubtedly one of the leading voices in the dressing room and at Bodymoor Heath, and will continue to be so.
