Crucial boost as Villa announce new contract for key figure

Aston Villa have announced that Tyrone Mings has signed a new contract with the club, thus extending his stay with his previous deal running until June 2024.

As per the club’s statement, Mings has put pen to paper on a new contract, although it doesn’t specify how long the new agreement is for as we wait to hear further details.

After initially joining on loan in January 2019, the 29-year-old has gone on to make 149 appearances for Villa, cementing his spot as a pivotal figure in the backline for us as we’ve earned promotion and solidified our place as a top-flight side again.

Mings had been an ever-present for us in the Premier League since Unai Emery took charge back in October, and while he missed his first game through injury last weekend, that defeat to Man City once again emphasised his importance for us and how badly we miss his presence when he’s absent.

Since the 2019/20 season, Mings has missed 12 Premier League games. In those games, Villa have won one, drawn two and suffered nine defeats, while conceding 24 goals.

While there is undoubtedly a need to raise the quality of the competition and depth in that department, there is no denying how important Mings is to the Villa defence, and while we’ll welcome Diego Carlos back later this month, it was vital that we sorted the England international’s future out.

Again, it’s unclear at this stage as to how long Mings has committed his future for, but ultimately it should now avoid a scenario where he has just 12 months remaining on his contract when we reach the summer, which in turn would have led to question marks being raised over whether or not he would stay long term.

Having established himself as a key figure under Emery, the new contract is another sign of how highly he is regarded by all at the club, and it’s hoped that he can continue to improve and develop under the Spaniard to be a driving force in our push to compete at a higher level in the coming months and years.
