Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has addressed his hopes for the January transfer window and has suggested that there could be both signings and exits.
Having collected nine points from a possible 12 in the Premier League since taking charge, the Villa boss has had an immediate positive impact since his arrival.

While he noted on several occasions after being unveiled that he was keen to work with the current group and get the best out of them first, there is no doubt that as time goes on, Emery will want the opportunity – and backing – to bring in reinforcements to strengthen the squad, which in turn also allows him to stamp his mark on the team.
The January transfer window will be his first opportunity to do that, and speaking this week, the Spanish tactician has confirmed that the club are looking at potential signings while also leaving the door open for exits to materialise too.
“We are speaking and we are working on the possibility to add some players,” he told the media, as per Villa TV. “We are speaking as well with some players who can leave.
“Really, I want to improve everything we can in the squad but I’m so happy with the players because I think we have very good players. But, of course, we can improve and we can add in some position because I think we are not plentiful in the positions in the squad that I want. The next four weeks, we are going to try to add some players but, really, only if they improve our team.”
The fact that he is looking for quality over quantity is crucial, and so it sounds as though if the right players and right deals don’t present themselves this month, Emery is potentially willing to wait until the summer to do the important business.
Having had time now to assess the squad and the players individually, he will be fully aware of where we can improve and be stronger, and so there is every faith that he will know which transfer targets should be at the top of the list.
Further, there will be players who don’t feature in his plans moving forward, and so it’s equally as important that we balance it out and streamline the squad to have what he feels is a group capable of competing at the top level.
It promises to be an intriguing and potentially exciting transfer window, and we’ll hopefully get more answers as to what Emery thinks of his current group with the business that we do get done.
