Emery drops hint on Villa transfer plans ahead of January window

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has noted that the club is working on our January transfer window strategy as we potentially look to strengthen his squad.

After a positive start to the campaign, Villa have suffered a slump in form in recent months as we’ve now gone eight games without a win across all competitions.

While it’s hoped that we can find solutions in the short-term to get ourselves back on track in our upcoming outings, it has raised the question over whether or not we need reinforcements in January to help us continue to make progress.

Ultimately, the expectation is that we will have to continue to be prudent in the transfer market due to PSR and so that will likely limit our activity, and it’s worth noting that since Emery and Monchi arrived at the club, we haven’t necessarily done any major deals in January.

That has been saved for the summer, but as we saw with Alex Moreno in Emery’s first season in charge and with Morgan Rogers this past January, we can certainly spot a good deal when it presents itself, and so time will tell if that trend will continue in 2025.

Speaking ahead of our clash with Brentford in midweek, Emery confirmed that the club are considering options ahead of the transfer window, and so it remains to be seen if we are active in the New Year.

“The club is working on it, but now I am focusing the match tomorrow and then the match on Saturday and then the match on Tuesday,” he told the media at his pre-match press conference.

“Always we have to be alert in case we can improve something in the squad, but the club is working on it.”

Emery is right to be focused on our next game, and critically, he has to find a way to get the best from those already at his disposal again as we’ve seen what they’re capable of, and they’ve recently fallen well short.

Reinforcements will undoubtedly provide a lift for the squad and hopefully add real quality and experience to our ranks to help us become more competitive, but it will likely be a targeted and meticulous strategy to ensure we add what we need and find long-term solutions to our current issues.
