Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has provided an update on our position in the transfer market with the deadline fast approaching.
With a week to go in the summer transfer window, it remains to be seen if Villa will continue to do further business after what has already been a busy few months.
READ MORE: Great news as influential Villa duo continue to close in on comeback from injury
Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen, Jaden Philogene, Samuel Iling-Junior, Enzo Barrenechea, Ross Barkley and Kosta Nedeljkovic [signed in January] have all arrived, while Moussa Diaby, Douglas Luiz, Omari Kellyman, Cameron Archer, Tim Iroegbunam, Morgan Sanson, Calum Chambers, Alex Moreno, Philippe Coutinho, Lewis Dobbin, Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Filip Marschall have all moved on through a combination of permanent and loan exits.
Villa appear to now have a strong squad capable of competing across multiple fronts if we can keep the majority of the group healthy and fit, and we’re still awaiting the returns of Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara from injury too, which will be another important boost.
Nevertheless, while it may seem as though we’re close to being complete, Emery has insisted that if an opportunity presents itself in the last few days of the window, Villa will be ready to make a move if it ultimately results in strengthening and improving what he already has at his disposal.
“Now we are more or less happy with the players we have in the squad,” he told reporters on Friday at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Arsenal. “Of course, if we can add some players which are a good opportunity we are going to be ready.
“Something can change, players leaving, or players joining. The most important things in transfer window we did.”
Speculation has unsurprisingly continued to link us with more activity both in terms of incomings and outgoings, with Iling-Junior heavily linked with a loan departure, while Raheem Sterling was the latest name to be paired with a potential move to join us.
Time will tell if those are two particular deals that might get done before the deadline, but every decision will undoubtedly be made in the best interests of the club, while trying to find the most suitable solution for the player in question too.
While we have lost some high-profile players who made an important contribution last season, we’ve made astute signings to improve the squad, and with influential players returning from injury, there is a lot of quality across the group now.
In turn, while we may already be in a position to spend if needed, Emery will want quality over quantity, and he’s now in a much better position to be more targeted in his approach when bringing in top-level reinforcements who can make the difference and help take us to the next stage in our process.
