Interest builds in talented Villa youngster but new contract could be in pipeline

Aston Villa will reportedly have to fend off interest if we are to agree on a contract extension with Lamare Bogarde in the coming months.

The 21-year-old is highly-rated at the club and has been tipped by many to go on and have a bright future for some time, and he’s starting to thrive under Unai Emery having made 11 appearances at senior level so far this season.

Further, he’s proven to be a valuable member of the first-team squad due to his versatility, as he’s been able to fill different voids in recent weeks due to our injuries in defence and midfield.

According to Fabrizio Romano, both Sevilla and Ajax are keen on the Dutchman, although he adds that Villa could open talks over a new deal with Bogarde, given his current contract runs until 2026.

Whether he stays beyond this summer or not, it makes sense from a Villa perspective to secure his long-term future sooner rather than later, as he’ll either go on to establish himself as a key figure in the squad for the long run, or it will strengthen our bargaining position if a sale becomes the more likely outcome.

Ideally, given he has impressed so far this season, Bogarde will continue to improve and develop under Emery in a Villa shirt, but time will tell if there’s space for him in the current group to gain valuable and regular minutes, or if he feels himself that he’ll have to move on in order to get that elsewhere.

Bogarde initially came through the youth ranks at Feyenoord prior to joining us in 2020, and he went on to make a positive impression in our youth team, and subsequently, the senior side.

In turn, he’ll hope that there’s a clearer pathway opening up for him to flourish at Villa, but it remains to be seen if that is a realistic possibility with the competition for places he faces. Or, it could make sense for both parties to perhaps consider a move elsewhere, with the progression, or lack of, in contract talks likely to give us an important early indication of which way his future might go.
