‘Perfect answer’ – Villa ace delighted with reaction, but calls for more improvement

Aston Villa defender Axel Disasi was delighted with our win over Brentford, but insists we must now be more consistent to end the season.

Ollie Watkins stuck in the 49th minute to secure all three points, but the win was built on a strong defensive performance at the Gtech Community Stadium.

It came after a bitterly disappointing and heavy defeat at Crystal Palace in our last Premier League outing, and although we followed that up with wins over Cardiff City and Club Brugge in the FA Cup and Champions League respectively, we needed to produce a positive and battling response in the league.

While there is still a long way to go and the top-half of the table is tightly packed in the battle for Champions League and European qualification, Disasi was right to point out the importance of this win, but ultimately the Frenchman reiterated that we must now be more consistent in our remaining games to climb the table.

“After playing in the Champions League it’s hard to win, but I think today we deserved the three points,” he told Sky Sports. “In the first half we played very well. At the beginning of the second half we scored, and then we saw the character of the team.

“We need to be more consistent. After the game we lost against Palace [in Villa’s last league game], we were hungry and wanted to correct it. The game today was the perfect answer because everyone was fighting.

“I just tried to do my best to help the team. I came here to play and enjoy myself. I’m very happy at Villa.

“We’ll take it one game at a time. We know we have to be higher in the league. We just have to stay focused. We have another game on Wednesday [in the Champions League]. I hope this kind of game will bring confidence to the team.”

As pointed out by Disasi, our attention will now switch to Europe again as we look to secure our place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in midweek, but that’s followed by an extended break ahead of our run-in.

The Villa loanee was impressive again in our latest win as he earned the Man of the Match award with a top defensive display that includes some critical interventions, and so it’s great to hear that he’s not only relishing his time with us this season, but he’s also producing on the pitch for Unai Emery.

We’ll likely need him to continue to produce at this level moving forward, as we’ll face more difficult away trips where the Villa boss may well prefer to go with a more solid backline consisting of Disasi, Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings all starting, and hopefully the standard has been set this weekend and we can maintain it.
