Aston Villa are reportedly making progress in their pursuit of Rosenborg starlet Sverre Nypan as talks continue over a potential deal.
The 18-year-old Norwegian midfielder has emerged as one of the most exciting and sought-after talents in Europe, as after coming through the youth ranks at Rosenborg, he’s gone on to register 14 goals and 11 assists in 63 appearances at senior level, while featuring for the U21s already at international level.

Villa’s President of Football Operations, Monchi, was spotted in Oslo watching Nypan in action on Monday as it was reported that he held talks with the youngster’s father, and now further speculation suggests that Villa are making progress in trying to secure his signature ahead of the competition this summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Villa are closing in on an agreement on personal terms with the talented prospect, and while the contract is almost agreed, the expectation is that the two clubs will then open discussions to try and reach a deal on a transfer fee.
In turn, while it’s certainly positive to hear that we’re moving in the right direction in this particular pursuit, there is seemingly still a lot to be sorted out before the club is in a position to confirm the signing.
Nevertheless, it’s evidently a priority as we’re wasting no time in trying to get the deal over the line before other clubs enter the fray either now or at the end of the season, and so Monchi, Unai Emery and our scouting department have spotted a talent that they not only rate highly, but believe could be a great fit for our current squad, and want to bring him to Villa this summer.
While comparisons have been made between Nypan and his compatriot Martin Odegaard given the similarities in their game and style of play, it could be said that he’s of a similar mould to Marco Asensio too, and so perhaps we’re looking for a longer-term solution in that department as it remains unclear if the Spanish playmaker will be signed permanently this summer.
For Villa though, this would be another exciting addition of a top young talent to the squad, and while he could flourish under Emery with his technical ability, composure, creative qualities and threat in the final third, it firstly remains to be seen if a deal can be concluded in the coming days and weeks to further strengthen the group.
