Villa paired with interest in commanding defensive reinforcement

Aston Villa are reportedly keeping tabs on Federico Gatti’s future at Juventus amid talk of a possible exit.

The 26-year-old joined the Turin giants in 2022 and has since gone on to make 105 appearances for the club while earning six caps with Italy.

Having made 42 appearances last season alone, he has firmly established himself as a key figure for Juve, but doubts are emerging over his future.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Gatti is evaluating offers this summer as although he currently has a contract that runs until 2028, renewal talks aren’t progressing the way he would like, and so he could consider alternative options away from Juventus.

That in turn is where Villa come in, as it’s reported that we’re admirers of the Italian international, and along with Napoli, we’re said to be monitoring his situation as we could look to swoop and bolster our defensive options.

Having announced a contract extension for Tyrone Mings this week, Unai Emery has three strong options at his disposal as things stand, with Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa set to continue to play fundamental roles for us in the backline.

Albeit there has been no confirmation as of yet, but it’s likely that Axel Disasi returns to Chelsea following the expiration of his loan spell, and so that once again leaves us short in defence, particularly in terms of having competition and depth with right-sided centre-halves.

That’s where Gatti could provide a solution, as the physical, imposing defensive ace has certainly impressed at Juventus with his defensive strengths and commanding performances, and so he could be an excellent addition to our squad.

At 26, he still has many years at the highest level ahead of him and with room for improvement under a coach like Emery, and so provided that Villa are in a position to land his signature given we have PSR and SCR-related concerns in the more immediate future, time will tell if we step up our touted pursuit of the Italian centre-half and secure a potentially key signing this summer.
