Villa confirm loan exit but disappointing detail in deal emerges

Aston Villa have confirmed that Yasin Ozcan has joined Anderlecht on a season-long loan deal, but with an option to buy included in the agreement.

The 19-year-old joined up with the Villa squad this summer after signing a pre-contract agreement with us earlier in the year, having impressed and shown his potential at Kasimpasa which in turn led to him earning his first senior cap for Türkiye in June.

Having featured for Villa in pre-season, it had been hoped that there was a clear plan to integrate the Turkish defender into our first-team squad either in the short-term or long-term future, but for this season at least, he’ll play his football elsewhere.

As per Villa’s official statement, Ozcan has joined Anderlecht on loan for the upcoming campaign, while the Belgian outfit have confirmed that there is a purchase option included in the agreement and so the talented and versatile defensive ace could ultimately leave on a permanent basis next summer.

The loan move itself makes sense, as despite Ozcan’s ability to play either as a centre-half or left-back, we have plenty of options in both positions and so he would likely play a very limited role with us if he stayed. In turn, a temporary switch to Anderlecht gives him the opportunity to play regularly, improve and develop his game while maturing and gaining valuable experience at a high level.

However, it’s the inclusion of the option to buy which will irk many, as although we understand the financial benefits of flipping young players for a profit, there has to be a strategy in place from the club to give these prospects a real shot at making a breakthrough in our first-team squad, or at least signing some with the actual intention of doing so.

We’ve seen it with many of our own Academy products and the likes of Kosta Nedeljkovic and Enzo Barrenechea now where we’re selling top talent without even strengthening our squad as of yet, and so question marks will start to be raised by many over our transfer strategy for the more immediate future and long run.

It’s hoped that if Ozcan impresses this season, there is a provision in the deal that allows Villa to re-sign him if Anderlecht exercise their option, as there is little doubt that the Turkish international looks to have a bright future ahead of him, and this process of signing young players and selling them on before ever really getting a run in the side is going to stoke frustration, particularly when they appear to be a good fit for Unai Emery’s system and style of play.
