Positive contract talks held as Villa look to secure new deal for third key figure

Aston Villa have reportedly held positive talks with Morgan Rogers over reaching an agreement on a new contract.

The 23-year-old arrived from Middlesbrough in January 2024, and he has since gone on to contribute 18 goals and 19 assists in 81 appearances for the club.

Having also broken into the senior England set-up to earn 10 caps in that time, Rogers has proven to be a pivotal addition for Unai Emery, as he wasted no time in establishing himself as an influential figure in our attacking unit not only through his goal contributions, but his tactical awareness and intelligence to become a key piece in the way we prefer to play.

While the talented attacking ace’s current contract runs until 2030, Sky Sports have reported that Villa have held positive talks with Rogers over signing a new deal that will no doubt reward him for his form in a Villa shirt thus far, while extending his stay for a further year until 2031.

It comes after The Athletic reported that Villa are closing in on agreeing new contracts with Matty Cash and John McGinn too, and so there is a clear strategy emerging from the club’s hierarchy with their wish to lock down the core of the squad as we look to build around them and continue to improve moving forward.

Although he struggled significantly during the early part of this season, along with the team as a whole, Emery’s trust and faith in Rogers never wavered as he encouraged him to play through the adversity and lack of confidence to rediscover his best form.

While he’s not quite there yet, he has contributed a goal and an assist in his past two Premier League games, and so the signs are certainly promising that he’s on the right track to getting back to being the decisive force we need him to be.

A new contract will hopefully not only secure his long-term future with us but also act as motivation to continue to push on and improve and develop, as Rogers has a major role to play in our push for success in the coming years, and should he put pen to paper, it will also be an indication that he’s fully bought into delivering that success at Villa and it will ultimately help fend off interest from elsewhere in him.
