Double Villa swoop touted to strengthen Emery’s squad this month

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Tammy Abraham and Conor Gallagher in the January transfer window to bolster Unai Emery’s squad.

Villa are currently third in both the Premier League and Europa League standings, while we booked our place in the fourth round of the FA Cup this weekend after defeating Tottenham.

In turn, this transfer window could be a fascinating one as the club look to make moves, both incomings and outgoings, to give Emery the best possible chance of building on the foundation that we’ve put down, and go for success in the second half of the campaign.

Talented Brazilian youngster Alysson has arrived from Gremio, but his adaptation process is expected to be a gradual one as he settles and looks to make an impact when Emery feels as though he’s ready to do so.

However, according to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, Abraham is now being targeted as a possible option to add more firepower to the Villa frontline in the more immediate future, while Gallagher is said to be on our transfer radar to add more quality and competition in midfield.

Abraham, 28, had a fantastic spell with us previously as he fired us to promotion from the Championship with 26 goals and three assists in 40 appearances, while he has since gone on to play for Chelsea, Roma and AC Milan.

The striker is currently on loan at Besiktas where he’s scored 12 goals and provided three assists in 24 outings, and it’s added that it could be a complicated deal to make given the switch becomes permanent if certain conditions are met.

In turn, we may need to act fast if we believe he is the best option to add to Emery’s squad to complement Ollie Watkins and give us another top option to lead the line, and it would certainly be welcomed to help us compete across three fronts in the coming months.

As for Gallagher, the 25-year-old joined Atletico Madrid in August 2024 and has gone on to appear 77 times for the Spanish giants, contributing seven goals and seven assists to go with his all-round influence in midfield.

With injuries to Amadou Onana, Ross Barkley and now Boubacar Kamara, adding a reinforcement in midfield could be a smart move this month with the expectation that this would be an initial loan deal, and so time will tell if it’s Gallagher who emerges as the most likely solution.

Emery and Villa were ambitious last January with loan moves for Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford to give us that extra boost as we chased our objectives, and it’s hoped that we see a similar strategy this year, but of course whilst staying within our means financially.
