Exit imminent as Villa tipped to complete deal in financial boost

Aston Villa are reportedly set to complete the sale of Lewis Dobbin to Southampton in a deal worth £9m with an announcement expected imminently.

The 23-year-old joined us from Everton in 2024, but he looks set to leave the club without making a single appearance under Unai Emery.

Instead, Dobbin has spent the last couple of seasons out on loan at West Brom, Norwich and Preston, and it seems his latest stint with the latter where he scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in 41 appearances, has attracted the interest of Southampton who are prepared to sign him on a permanent basis.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Southampton has signed all the documents to finalise the move, and Dobbin will join the Championship side in a deal worth £9m.

That’s a great fee for a player who is seemingly unlikely to make a breakthrough with us, and coupled with clearing his wages, it hopefully gives us additional financial flexibility this summer to go and spend on reinforcements of our own.

Naturally, there is a sense of disappointment that another signing of a talented young player that we’ve made hasn’t resulted in him going on to become a key member of our first-team squad, as ideally we’d like to see some of these players get an opportunity.

However, Villa have had a clear strategy in the transfer market in recent years as we continue to navigate both domestic and European financial regulations, and so it’s hoped that this has proven to be a smart approach which helps us in the short term and long term future.

For Dobbin, he will get the chance to play a prominent role for a Championship side and kick on with his career, while the Saints will hope he can build on the form that he showed last season and give them further firepower to push for promotion. In turn, it’s a move that suits all, and hopefully we see the benefits for Villa sooner rather than later when it comes to this transfer window and bringing in our own signings to improve Emery’s squad.
