Aston Villa have confirmed the departure of goalkeeper Joe Gauci, who has joined Lincoln City in a season-long loan deal.
The 26-year-old joined us from Adelaide United in January 2024, but he has unsurprisingly found game time hard to come by since due to the ongoing presence of Emiliano Martinez, as well as Robin Olsen and Marco Bizot who have all sat ahead of him in the pecking order.

Gauci has spent time on loan at Barnsley and Port Vale already since joining Villa, and he will now prepare for a third loan stint elsewhere, as the club have confirmed in a statement that the Australian international has joined Lincoln on a season-long loan deal.

It’s difficult to see a path for Gauci at Villa, as he’s at a stage in his career now where he will want to play regularly and certainly not sit as third choice at Villa with no real prospects of playing any meaningful football.
In turn, it’s hoped that this proves to be a productive spell for him where he can showcase his talent and qualities, and that will hopefully lead to a permanent switch, be it to Lincoln or elsewhere, to allow him the chance to enjoy a fresh start.
Bizot will continue to provide cover and competition for Martinez this season, while youngster James Wright could serve as third choice as he continues to gain experience during pre-season.
That said, much will depend on Emery’s preference in that department as to whether he wants a more experienced third choice in the goalkeeper ranks, and so it remains to be seen if Villa opt to fill that void in the coming weeks.
Nevertheless, it’s a sensible short-term solution for the club and player, and time will tell what it leads to in the longer-term picture as a permanent exit will surely be the preference at some stage as Gauci now has just two years remaining on his Villa contract.
