Double injury boost spotted in Villa training ahead of PSG clash

Aston Villa will face Paris Saint-Germain for the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg on Wednesday night, and Unai Emery has received a double injury boost.

After winning the Europa League in May, Villa will look to add another piece of European silverware to our collection this week, but it certainly promises to be a difficult challenge against a side as strong as PSG.

In order to have the best possible chance of winning, Emery would have been hoping for good news on the injury front to start the week, and it appears as though he has received some.

As per the club’s post on social media, both John McGinn and Alejandro Garnacho have returned to group training after they were seen joining their teammates at Bodymoor Heath for the Tuesday morning session.

While Garnacho sustained a nasty facial injury during our pre-season tour of Asia against BG Pathum United, McGinn provided us all with a major scare after he suffered a knee injury following an awkward landing in the second half of the same game.

Both players missed our defeat to Bayern Munich in Hong Kong last Friday, but it appears as though they are in with a chance of featuring against PSG, after they were also named in the squad for the encounter in Austria.

It’s unclear at this stage if Emiliano Martinez, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins have returned or will be able to play any part in the game after their extended breaks following the World Cup, but it would certainly be a major boost to our chances of winning in midweek if they were at Emery’s disposal.

That said, if the injury risk outweighs their ability to influence the game given their lack of minutes since the World Cup ended, then it might make more sense to leave them on the bench and hope that others step up and deliver.
