Aston Villa have confirmed that defender Matt Targett has signed a contract extension with the club that keeps him with us until 2025.
Targett joined the club in 2019 from Southampton, and has since gone on to make 64 appearances for Villa having now firmly established himself as the first-choice left-back under Dean Smith.

The 25-year-old has been particularly impressive this season as he has improved significantly compared to last year to become one of the more consistent and reliable figures in the current starting XI. With that in mind, it’s certainly a deserved reward for him to sign a new deal.
As confirmed on the club’s official site, Targett has put pen to paper on a contract extension that keeps him at Villa Park until 2025, and joins a number of other pivotal players in committing their respective futures to the club.
Jack Grealish, John McGinn, Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa and now Targett have all recently agreed on new terms, and the expectation is that Villa will look to add to that list in the coming months to ensure that the building blocks are in place as we continue to progress.
When asked what made him want to sign the new deal, Targett told VillaTV: “The way the club is progressing. It’s a really exciting time to be part of this project. To commit my future a further two years is amazing & I can’t wait to carry on this journey here.”
With the futures of a string of key players in the current side now secured, Villa will hope to use that as a platform to go out and sign their preferred targets this summer to continue to strengthen as we look to carry on moving up the Premier League table.
